Market Review - April 2026
May 18, 2026

What Happened in the World
March ended on a scary note, the US and Iran were in conflict, and markets everywhere took a hit. April started with that fear still in the air.
But then, mid-April, a ceasefire was announced. And just like that, the mood shifted. Markets around the world bounced back and India bounced back harder than most.

How Did Indian Markets Do?
April was a great month. One of the best in over two years.
| Index | April 2026 |
|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | +7.46% |
| Sensex | +6.90% |
| Midcap 100 | +13.55% |
| Smallcap 100 | +18.44% |
The sectors that did best: Real Estate, Metals, FMCG, and Banking.
What About My SIP and Mutual Funds?
- ₹38,440 crore flowed into equity mutual funds in April. Investors kept investing despite all the global noise.
- SIP contributions: ₹31,115 crore, slightly lower than March’s record, but still very strong.
- Industry AUM jumped to ₹81.92 lakh crore up from ₹73.73 lakh crore in March, largely because markets recovered.
- Flexi-cap funds (funds that invest across all company sizes) were the most popular, attracting ₹10,147 crore.
- Hybrid funds, which mix equity and debt, also saw strong inflows at ₹20,565 crore.
Foreign Investors Sold. Markets Still Went Up. Why?
Here’s something worth understanding.
Foreign investors sold ₹60,847 crore worth of Indian stocks in April. That’s a big number. Normally, that kind of selling drags markets down.
But this time, domestic investors bought enough to absorb it. Markets went up despite foreign selling.
This is a big deal. It means India’s market is no longer dependent on foreign money to stay healthy. Your SIPs are quietly becoming the backbone of Indian markets.

What About Gold?
Gold stayed in demand globally throughout April. Investors around the world continued to hold gold as a safety net especially in the first half of the month when the geopolitical situation was still uncertain.
If you hold gold in your portfolio, it likely did its job keeping things steady while equities were volatile.
What Does This Mean for You?
- If your money was already invested: April rewarded your patience. The investors who stayed put through March’s fall gained significantly this month. That’s the SIP story in action.
- If you’re just starting: This month is a perfect example of why timing the market doesn’t work but time in the market does. Starting a SIP today means you benefit from exactly this kind of recovery, automatically.
- If you have a lump sum to invest: Don’t put it all in at once after a strong month like this. Spread it over 2–3 months to average out your entry.
- One thing to watch in May: Foreign investors are still net sellers of Indian stocks. That could create some short-term ups and downs. But as April showed, Indian investors are holding the market steady. Stay with your plan.
